September 24, 2024
11 a.m. local time
Currently located 180 miles/295 km ESE of Cozumel, Tropical Storm Helene is moving northwest at 12 mph and will be crossing the northwestern Caribbean through tonight. This storm is expected to strengthen during the next few days, and is forecast to become a hurricane on Wednesday as it moves into the Gulf of Mexico. Due to its course, a Tropical Storm Warning and Hurricane Watch are now in effect for Cancun and the surrounding area as far south as Tulum. The Quintana Roo State Government has declared a Yellow Alert for Cancun and Puerto Morelos and a Green Alert for Playa del Carmen. Royal Resorts, along with the Mexican authorities, are watching its possible path closely and we will provide regular updates.
Heavy rain is expected in the area today, continuing tonight and gradually dying out tomorrow afternoon. The wind will pick up and the strongest gusts are forecast for early tomorrow morning and between 7 a.m. and 12 p.m. Ocean swells will continue to affect the area for the next couple of days, bringing larger waves, rip tides and a storm surge of between 2 and four feet.
The wellbeing of guests and team members is our top priority and we are implementing our hurricane season protocols to ensure their safety and prepare the resorts and grounds. Our team members are well-trained and ready to take great care of guests.
The Aqua Park at The Royal Sands will be closed today until weather conditions improve. Room Service will be suspended at all four resorts from 10 p.m. today to 7 a.m. tomorrow. Rainy day activities will be available at all the resorts today and tomorrow.
Information on the storm’s path and how it may affect the Mexican Caribbean will be updated here as it becomes available and published at the Front Desk in the resorts. Guests can also tune into the Weather Channel on the room TV or refer to the National Hurricane Center website nhc.noaa.gov and the Weather Channel weather.com.
