First Timers’ Guide to a Ski Swap

By Caitlin Habenicht | Edited by Ben Bertsch and Ryan Williams

Winter is coming, and the stoke is building across the Pacific Northwest. We’ve already seen snow, so it’s time to get geared up. A ski swap makes it easy to start shopping.

Never been to one? Here’s how a ski swap works. Plus, you’ll find a few tips to make the most of your visit.

What Is a Ski Swap?

At a ski swap, you can browse a large selection of gear from local shops and national brands. For example, you might find skis, snowboards, boots, and clothing. Prices are often budget-friendly, which makes swaps especially useful for growing kids or anyone new to the sport.

Why Attend a Ski Swap?

  1. Find great deals on gear. With plenty of options in one place, it’s easier to find equipment that fits your needs and your budget.
  2. Get help choosing the right gear. Shop staff and gear experts can answer questions about fit, equipment, and what might work for you.
  3. Meet your mountain community. You’ll have a chance to connect with resorts, local skiers, and riders. As a result, you might meet someone to share a few laps this winter.
  4. Discover winter deals. Beyond gear, many mountains offer special prices on passes, tickets, and more.

Who Will Be at the Ski Swap?

There’s more than gear to explore. Here are some of the people and organizations you can expect to meet:

  • Ski and snowboard shops: Your favorite local shop may be there, along with shops from across the Pacific Northwest. You could also discover a new place to shop for gear.
  • Local mountain resorts: Crystal Mountain and other resorts from Washington, Oregon, and Idaho will be there. Stop by to meet the crews and hear what’s new for winter.
  • Outdoor brands: Meet the people behind the gear you use. For example, ask about the materials and technology that keep you warm on the slopes.
  • Local skiers and riders: The Pacific Northwest has some of the country’s most challenging terrain. Just as useful, meeting local skiers and riders can help you find people to explore it with.

First-Timer Tips: How to Make the Most of a Ski Swap

A little preparation goes a long way. Before you head out, keep these tips in mind:

  • Arrive early. The best selection is often available when the doors open, so plan to arrive on time.
  • Know your sizes. Check your boot, pole, jacket, pants, and helmet sizes ahead of time. If you’re unsure, gear experts can help you find the right fit.
  • Ask questions. The people at the swap are there to help. Ask about fit, condition, and which gear might suit your experience level.
  • Compare your options. Have a particular item in mind? Save its online specs so you can compare them with the gear you find at the swap.
  • Visit the resort booths. Resorts often have special offers on tickets and passes. At the Crystal Mountain booth, you can learn about our event-only 3-Day Pass for $209.

Pro tip: If you’re new to skiing or snowboarding, you don’t need to buy everything before your first day. Instead, try renting while you learn. That gives you time to figure out what works for you, especially with boots.
