The Travel Gallery – Blog
Here’s our monthly gallery showcasing some of the region’s many natural and historical attractions. How many have you visited? Which ones would you like to explore on future trips to Royal Resorts?
Zaci Cenote
If you visit the colonial town of Valladolid, don’t miss Zaci Cenote on Calle 36. Surrounded by ceiba, cedar, palm, wild fig and breadnut trees, this is a massive 80-meter-deep sinkhole similar to the Sacred Well in Chichen Itza, with a winding stone staircase leading down into the cave. Steep walls festooned with jungle vines and tree roots tumble down into the turquoise depths of a clear pool and swallows circle endlessly, skimming the surface of the water to catch insects.
Ik-kil Cenote
If you are going to Chichen Itza, visit the nearby Ik-Kil Cenote after your visit to the archaeological site for a cooling dip. It is a deep sinkhole rather like the Sacred Well at Chichen Itza and its limestone walls are festooned with jungle creepers and aerial tree roots.
Dzitnup Cenote
Deep in a cave and illuminated by a shaft of sunlight, Dzitnup is perhaps the Yucatan’s most photographed cenote. Located a short drive from the colonial town of Valladolid, it is just one of many sinkholes scattered across the eastern Yucatan.
Kaan Luum Lagoon
Kaan Luum is a turquoise lagoon in the jungle just to the south of Tulum. You can swim from the wooden deck and there are ojos de agua or freshwater springs – the zones of darker blue and deeper water – in parts of the lagoon. They bubble up towards the surface from underground rivers and cenotes.
Organized day trips to Kaan Luum also include visits to the nearby Mariposa and Chen-Ha cenotes and to a Maya community to learn about the ancient tradition of bee keeping and the Melipona stingless bee native to the Yucatan, and cacao cultivation.
